In the 50’s and 60’s Aubrey & Mary de Lisle were synonymous with architecture and art in Hamilton, including nationally significant examples of Modernist civic architecture.
When it came time to design their own home in 1956, they chose a leafy suburb of Woodstock, a slightly elevated section with a huge 1241m2 canvas on which to create their family haven.
Heart Rimu framing, Matai floors, fibrous plaster ceilings and commercial grade Oakley steel window frames were prerequisites of the de Lisles, and 60+ years later these choices have proven their value as they have not only stood the test of time, but they’ve also been retained during a sympathetic restoration by the current owners who fell in love 6 years ago with this classic.
In 1964 a spacious 50m2 extension in keeping with the main residence brief was added creating a light-filled spacious artist’s studio which today makes an ideal retreat, or potential for a master bedroom with ensuite conversion, or a possible work from home scenario.
The current owners are passionate followers of architecture and particularly fond of the mid-century movement, and feel they are merely custodians of this classic, so when it came time to give the home a facelift, they were careful to retain the design principles and features that the de Lisle’s had envisaged all those years ago. Today you walk in and instantly feel at home with the warmth of natural timbers, huge glazing to take in the extensively treed and leafy surroundings that defy the fact that you are so handily located to the Central City, Diocesan School & Woodstock Primary, while just a short stroll to the French Tart Café and River Walks.
